Escape rooms in Vienna: where you should actually go

Vienna has more escape rooms than any other city in Austria — the catalogue lists 132 games from 24 operators. Search “escape rooms Vienna” and you get a map plus three studios. That helps if you already know where to go. If you don’t, you need a pick by occasion: first night, family, kids’ birthday, horror — or something that only exists here.

What follows are real rooms, not an ad list. Each tip has the catalogue card — age, length, rating, U-Bahn — and, where the calendar is open, the next free times. EscapeGame Wien, GAME OVER and Escape Mission you can book here. For the rest, the click opens the operator’s page.

There is no single “best” room. The Subway is a different night from School of Magic, and SAW is not a first game even if the stars look good. The order follows the evening you are booking — not a studio’s homepage.

How to pick the right room

Three questions are enough before you pay.

Who is in the room? Age 8 is a different game from 14 or 18. “The little ones can watch” usually means the little ones get bored while the adults solve.

Puzzles or shocks? Studios love the word “medium”. For a first visit that is often too much: a long chain, a timer that eats the group, someone standing in the way. A good first room is readable, has no jump-scares, and lets you finish.

Where do you play? The centre — 1010, Schwedenplatz, Stephansplatz — saves time if you eat afterwards. The longer and harder rooms sit in the 3rd and 9th districts. Outdoor games often start at Nestroyplatz or the Stadtpark; you need shoes and a weather plan, not just a U-Bahn stop.

First time

If you have never played

The first room should feel like a shared game, not an exam. No horror, a chain you can follow, from age 10. If the studio page says “hard” or “18+”, that is night two or three.

Start with Die Kunst des Klauens at Schwedenplatz: an art heist, little fear, 60 minutes, two to six people — and you can open the calendar here. If that slot is gone, Tutankhamun and Der Zauberer are in the same house. Orient Express at GAME OVER is the step after: murder on a train, adults, not a kids’ birthday.

Family

For the whole family

Family means grandparents and teenagers in the same room, no jump-scares, often from age 8, easy to reach. That is not the same night as a kids’ birthday — that block is separate.

The Castle at First Escape is the classic family room in the centre, from age 8. Mission Belvedere at NoWayOut brings Klimt and the Belvedere into the 1st district — it still works if not everyone is there for the puzzles. Der Alchemist at Escape Mission is the calendar in this block when The Castle is full.

Klimt, lasers, NoWayOut at Stephansplatz. A Vienna setting that still works if not everyone in the family came for the puzzles.

Kids

With children and for a birthday

For primary school and birthdays you need a game built for children — not “from 14, the little ones can watch”. In Vienna that is mostly two formats: the magic school and outdoor in the Stadtpark.

If you searched “Harry Potter escape room Vienna”, you want School of Magic at GAME OVER. It is not a Hogwarts licence, but it is the room that query means: from age 8, wands, readable puzzles. For ages 6–12 and larger kids’ groups, the Stadtpark outdoor is the better fit — up to 24 children, no basement, plan for weather and shoes.

A mysterious adventure awaits you in Vienna's City Park! Monster researchers are looking for brave helpers to uncover mysterious clues and hidden secrets. An interactive experience specially designed for children aged 6 to 12—ready to explore the monster world?

U1916Nestroyplatz

Stadtpark, ages 6–12, up to 24 kids. No basement: plan for weather and shoes. For a class or a large birthday, more honest than a 14+ room “to watch”.

Horror

If you want to be scared

Only if the whole group wants that theme. 18+ means 18+. The abandoned orphanage is not “a bit tense” for a first night, and SAW is not either.

Das verlassene Waisenhaus is in the same house as the heist, high fear, 14+. SAW is the hardest room you can book here. The Nun at NoWayOut is a performance with an actress — more intense than a classic room; the operator takes the reservation. Das Geisterhaus at Schwedenplatz sits in between: scary without the top shelf.

Districts, price and how you book

Most “escape room 1010 Vienna” searches mean the centre: First Escape (The Castle, The Subway), NoWayOut (Mission Belvedere, The Nun) and EscapeGame Wien at Morzinplatz. EscapeGame’s second address is in the 3rd. Crime Runners plays in the 9th at Schottentor. Escape Mission and the outdoor starts sit towards Nestroyplatz.

For 1020, 1060 or 1100 the full catalogue is the honest answer. Other studios live there — VR, a cellar in Döbling, Favoriten — and they are not in this pick because the occasion is different.

A night is roughly €90–160 per group; outdoor and large groups cost more. Two people fit almost everywhere, seven or eight only in some rooms, 18 or 24 only outdoors. Weekend evenings go first; the slots above are the next free times, not an ad.

Common questions about escape rooms in Vienna

Can I book here?

A click on the time opens the room page on the calendar. EscapeGame Wien, GAME OVER and Escape Mission go through Escape Navigator. For the rest the operator takes the reservation.

Family or kids — what is the difference?

Family: mixed ages, often from 8, no horror, central. Kids: a birthday or primary school — School of Magic or outdoor in the Stadtpark. “From 14, the little ones can watch” is not a kids’ game.

What does an escape room cost in Vienna?

Roughly €90–160 per group; outdoor and large groups more. The live price is in the calendar before you confirm — not a guess on the card.

Is there a Harry Potter escape room in Vienna?

That search lands on School of Magic at GAME OVER: a magic school from age 8, no Hogwarts licence. For ages 6–12 and larger kids’ groups the Stadtpark outdoor is often the better fit.

Which room is good for a first visit?

Die Kunst des Klauens at Schwedenplatz: an art heist, little horror, from age 10, bookable here. If that slot is gone — Tutankhamun or Der Zauberer in the same house. “Medium” on a studio page is rarely a first night.

From what age is horror?

The abandoned orphanage from 14, SAW from 18. The Nun is a performance and more intense than a classic room. Only book it if the whole group wants the theme — not as a surprise.

Does it work for two — or a large group?

Two people fit almost every classic room. Seven or eight only in selected games. Up to 18 or 24 is outdoor — Sisi or the kids’ game in the Stadtpark, not a 60-minute basement.

1010 or another district?

For a first night and a family, the centre is enough: Schwedenplatz, Stephansplatz, Morzinplatz. Longer and harder rooms sit in the 3rd and 9th. Outdoor often starts at Nestroyplatz or the Stadtpark.
